Shrink to fit

I like this editorial not only because it features three of my favourite models (Freja, Abbey Lee and of course Lara=goddess) but also because it stood out from other editorials. The playful/facetious styling (i.e. making sophisticated garments by Chanel, Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs look raggedy) caught my eye. That combined with the "shrunken" cropped sweaters and hairsprayed messes of hair make it look like the whole editorial went into the dryer, came out and somehow...still managed to look great because it's different and not predictably "pretty." So kudos to fashion editor Karl Templer and photographer Steven Meisel for this Vogue Italia editorial.

Doubled

Double denim and double me. I've been running around all day and now I'm out the door...

Denim, lace and shoes

Jalouse March 2010 continues the big denim trend for spring. I chose my favourites from the editorial. Stylist Sébastien Cambos dresses Marloes Horst (photographed by Sol Sanchez) in a Chanel cotton and crinoline skirt, in Vanessa Bruno fringe and in delicate lace for a feminine take on denim. I also get kind of a western cowgirl vibe from the hats (also a stripper vibe - not so keen on the poses). The fourth picture has no denim, but I am in love with that Dolce & Gabbana white lace and fringe dress. I want to get married in it (to it?) and I hate weddings, particularly wedding dresses.

Last, but not least, the shoes. You may remember them from such Jalouse editorials as this. They are Sportmax laced leather and canvas cutaway boots. I want them. I prefer them in muted beige or khaki green tones rather than the brown ones featured in this Jalouse editorial.

Flea market treasure

I picked up this big turquoise necklace (hey, can you guess what my recent obsession is?) at the outdoor flea market in Jaffa - probably the best flea market I've been to because of its dizzying selection of jewelry and clothing but also its affordable prices. I think this necklace set me back an equivalent of 5 euro.

I look forward to going back to Israel if not solely for that flea market. Jaffa (Yafo in Hebrew) is beautiful - it's "the most ancient city centre and port within the Tel Aviv region" and believed to be  one of the oldest ports in the world (wikipedia). You can also tell by all the modern apartments, trendy bars and restaurants surfacing that the area is being gentrified. It's a neighbourhood now favoured by yuppy artists (I was shown a beautiful place with a rooftop terrace now occupied by some actor - would love to live in that), so you get a mix of old and new.

I was only able to do a quick once over through the small streets riddled with booths, boutiques, shops and narrow corridors of junk and goodies. I would love to spend an entire day at the flea market taking pictures and hunting for treasures, but unfortunately I only got there Friday afternoon (closed on weekends and I left Sunday)...

Alright, it's been only 3 days since I've been back and I'm already nostalgic! Here is today's outfit. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I think every girl should have at least one statement necklace. It'll make your outfit and it doesn't have to cost you much.

J.Crew Fall 2010 RTW

J. Crew? Who knew. The collection depicts: "Edie Beale goes to Girl Scout camp." If you haven't seen Grey Gardens (the original documentary, not the Drew Barrymore/Jessica Lange HBO version), watch it. Bizarre/wonderful Big Edie and Little Edie are creative director Jenna Lyons' inspiration for this J. Crew collection.

There is just too much I love about this. It's easy to admire individual pieces: the tweed blazers and coats, chambray button downs, the fur bag, shearling lined vest, knit thigh highs and that wonderful plaid flannel cape. What really blows me away, however, is the textural layering. I'm beginning to realize that mastering the art of layering is the essence of style. Details, like floral embellishments and hats by Albertus Swanepoel add to the eccentric styling. Also note the presence of camel. Camel is the new black, or should I say the new khaki, which was the new black a month ago?

This is the floral dress I bought in a little shop in Tel Aviv, paired with heels I had forgotten about, found in the back of my closet. I love it when that happens.

Tomboy

Big plaid button downs, argyle, fedoras, red bandanas and skateboards. It's fun to steal your boyfriend's things.

Happy Easter

The pastels and yellows in this 2005 Vogue UK editorial seem fitting for this occasion. This is Lily Donaldson by Carter Smith. It's always fun to flip through old editorials and ponder whether the styling is still relevant. I wouldn't immediately know that this is five years old, but you can kind of tell by the accessories...or the hem lines, details on the cardigans... I think about it and yeah, this is kind of how my friends and I dressed in 2005. We didn't shy away from colour, we loved pastels, big beaded necklaces and chunky bracelets.

Leaving on a jet plane

It's my last morning in Israel - leaving for the airport in a few hours. I know my posts have been sparse since I've been here, but once I get back to rainy Amsterdam and we remove beaches from the equation, I'm sure I'll be back to my regular posting self. Today's inspiration stems from three things:

1 - Switching back to cold(er) weather i.e. having to surrender the sundress and flip flops for something more seasonally appropriate.

2 - Missing my girlfriends. A lot.

3 - Amanda Norgaard, the 17-year-old Danish model.

These pictures have been sitting on my desktop for a while and I still find the oversized jean shorts and Doc Martens effortless and refreshing. The long side braid à la Alexander Wang S/S 2010 is something I would be constantly wearing if I hadn't CUT OFF ALL MY HAIR last winter. And looking at the pictures of Amanda with Dorothea smiling and being silly makes me miss having a good friend around.

Too much?

So mayyybe I went a little overboard with the turquoise rings at the market the other day. To my defense, the five of them together cost the equivalent of around $10 and when the stones fall out of a couple of them, I'll have back-ups? The boyfriend: "Ok, I don't ever tell you you're being excessive, but..."
