Where I've been

I'm back in Amsterdam, have been back since Wednesday. It's been hard re-adjusting, especially after my 2.5 weeks in happy. Before I get back into fashion, which I will, here are the polaroids I promised.

One of the best parts of my trip was wandering around Portland and finding the death to the Pixies t-shirt I've been looking everywhere for (the boyfriend's is too tattered and too big for me). There it was on a hanger all perfect and in my size for 10 bucks at Ray's Ragtime.

And then I got back here and threw it in the wash, not knowing there was a small tub of lip balm in some pocket of some unimportant garment. A small tub of lip balm that subsequently was discovered, empty, after unloading the DRYER. Death to the Pixies, spotted in little oil stains. Heartbreaking. It's not too noticeable, but it bothers me. Possible fix is to put in small vintage-esque rips where the stains are...sigh.

I've been in 4 cities since the last post - Amsterdam, Montreal, Vancouver and now Portland - haven't had any time to post. I've been busy (and by "busy" I mean "lazing around on various Vancouver beaches and road tripping south") but polaroids are being taken, will continue to be taken and will be scanned in time. Inspiration: Acne Pre-S/S 2011. Thick heels make stilettos look like wimps. I'm tired of wedges too (that was fast). Besides, these would fare well on the Dutch cobblestones I tackle awkwardly on a nightly basis.

In descending order: Seychelles Cheerio boots, Jeffrey Campbell Bradley boots, Chloé leather lace-up boots, Jeffrey Campbell Lita boots (if you want to buy me these as a present, I'm a size 7 and go here and I'll love you forever).

Inspiration: Nadia from FrouFrouu. This is the easiest more perfect summer look to go with a messy up-do. Just go out, find a little vintage $2 silky scarf, do a quick twice-over-wrap-around (makes sense to me?) and tie a knot at the top.

I realize it's wishful thinking. Wishful thinking that I'm this beautiful wispy nymph-like creature in Garance's illustration, wishful thinking that she'd use ME as her subject...but wishful thinking is alright sometimes. Maybe it's me with a different hair cut. Or me if I were a cartoon character. A cartoon character when I was 14?

On the topic of illustration, I'm working on a few of my own right now. After my camera died, I thought it would be fun and challenging to illustrate some of my recent outfits and post my drawings. And then I realized not only do I not have a scanner, I don't have a camera (Hello, it broke! Remember, Tu-Linh? It happened at the beginning of this paragraph!) to take pictures of the illustrations and post those. So for now, I have to keep you in suspense while I continue to draw.

I'll always be obsessed with women in menswear. Diane Keaton as Annie Hall is THE icon for this style, with her waistcoats and oversized blazers. Now, I prefer the look when it's less baggy, a bit more tailored to the female body and kind of retro rockabilly. Skinny trousers, white dress shirts with skinny black ties, oxfords and brogues and the nonchalantly tousled & flipped short hair.

I'm surviving a heat wave in Amsterdam (after escaping a heat wave in Montreal), the humidity and high temperatures rendering clothing an extraneous element in my life. Though, I have to say, this 10 Euro h&m white triangle string bikini is the best bikini I've ever had - not necessarily because of the style or quality, but because it fits me perfectly.

Ok, so maybe if Bambi Northwood-Blyth was modeling a collection of burlap sacks, I would still blog about it because I'm IN LOVE with her (along with EVERY OTHER blogger, I know). But here's an Aussie label I love for its laid back, breezy, beach-town vibe. I imagine myself leading a happy coastal life whilst donning a sheer floral jumpsuit. But Shakuhachi is so much more than just beach. It's sexy and sophisticated in its details, like the cutouts of the maxi dress and the lace and sheer details in the last two dresses (love that pink bandage dress).

Especially since a) I loved it, b) I never posted about it, and more relevantly c) it was designers Nicole and Michael Colovos' introduction of a denim-focused line. A little minimal, a little goth, lots of tight leathery and legging-y things = "tough-chic."

This isn't about vacationing in St. Tropez or St. Barts. When I think of Rag & Bone, I think understated casual, reinvented tomboy, muted greys and impeccable layering. Like if Annie Hall were made today, she'd be dressed in Rag & Bone. If I liked tweed in their fall collection (I'll still find it here, but), I love the light silky fabrics in this collection. Weekend getaway looks

I surprised the boyfriend with a weekend getaway to the bustling and glamourous Hague (ha). Honestly though, it was wonderful. Between our boutique hotel with its Versailles-inspired decor (maybe a bit of an overstatement) and randomly hearing (though perhaps not serendipitously, just because it's) Bon Jovi live on the beach at Scheveningen, we had the most fun and romantic weekend, as modest as it was. Now we're back with a bit of a tan (ok, maybe it's a sunburn) to show for it.

The boyfriend forced me to go shopping with him, after which I styled and photographed him. I'm not as comfortable with men's fashion. My take on men's fashion is generally pretty simple: jeans, a t-shirt and Chucks (the grungier and I-don't-care-how-I-look-or-dress-ier, the better) and you'll have me swooning as long as you're comfortable and confident and sincere. You could pretty much wear jeans and a t-shirt every day of your life, really. But...it's nice to have a little fun sometimes.

Outfit 1: I like khakis and think there is a way to wear them without looking like a total yuppy prep, even when worn with loafers. So I rolled the pants up and threw a plaid shirt on him. Plaid shirts are always in style and make me grunge nostalgic - when I see plaid, I see Kurt Cobain.

Outfit 2: Again, how do you avoid looking like a preppy asshole when wearing chinos and a dress shirt? Throw on something a bit tattered, a bit loved and with a bit of edge. Like a favourite army jacket you picked up at a flea market.

Outfit 3: I had to, right? Jeans and white tee = my favourite man outfit especially when worn with rockin' boots and a James Dean-esque smoldering look + cigarette dangling out of the mouth. You can't see the belt, but it's a favourite of mine. He's had it forever, this ridiculously old and worn studded belt with half the studs missing. Also, the skull necklace is a Tu-Linh original. It had a white skull too (whittled from Moroccan stones or something), but...alas, boys break and lose things.

Outfit 4: You can't really appreciate what I like most about this look due to my shoddy photography and my editing that fades out detail (I like the polaroid aesthetic ok?). 1 - The fact that it's a grey suit over a black vest over a white t-shirt - I have no explanation for that, I just like it. 2 - The suit pants are tucked into the same boots as the last outfit. Even when you have to be business or formal, don't forget you're a rocker at heart.

Final thoughts: Boys, you can care about how you dress or look but don't care too much. Don't question it too much or fuss over your clothes - just keep it simple and be confident in your own skin first and foremost. Cultivate a style and not an obsession - nothing is a worse turn off than excessive man vanity. (Um, manity?)

So I'm vacationing in Saint-Tropez, playing pétanque with Diane Kruger and Vanessa Paradis, at sunset, barefoot on the grass in a chiffon maxi dress, delicately pastel printed, holding my coral sandals nonchalantly in one hand as I toss the metal boule with the other...just a typical evening on the Riviera. Also, somehow, it's the 70s - we've all gone back in time and Mick Jagger is serenading me.

Back to reality, to sunny (finally) Amsterdam, a starving artist sitting cross-legged on the floor in jean shorts and a tee, drinking from a mini keg of Heineken. This isn't so bad at all...I really don't think I'd have it any other way. 15 year-old me would look at present me and think I was the coolest person ever. That's always a nice thought.

Many years ago, I bought a pair of $30 brown faux leather biker boots, even before Frye really blew up. Those boots graced my little feet through 7 Canadian winters and were by far the warmest, most comfortable, most worn, most commented on and simply the coolest boots I have ever owned. Picture #1: A portrait of Garance by Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist). Did you know that the word dandelion is a "corruption of the French dent de lion," referring to its coarsely tooth leaves? And did you know that the French word for dandelion is pissenlit because of its diuretic effects? (Thank you, Wikipedia) I approach dandelions the same way I approach birthday candles - make a wish and blow away.

Picture #2: I love that through some pictures, a photographer's presence is so discernible. Here is a model shot smiling, barefoot, simply dressed, cross-legged on the floor. Through this, I feel Garance's ingenuous and whimsical personality. No?

A Convoluted Trend Report

This is going to be interesting. Welcome to a brief tour of my brain. Behind you is the visual cortex, where there is just a bundle of information swimming around. Don't be confused by the plethora of images which include beads, pelts, leather and tassels, all against a soft white backdrop. You may run into a girl here, her long tresses tied into loose braids and adorned with feathers. Don't bother her, though, she's crocheting herself a sweater.

When I think of summer, this is what I see. Flower girl meets Last of the Mohicans. In a white dress. And this is my trend report. All runway looks are from Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

For me, Jordan Bettan's Lost Art accessories reinvigorate the craft of leatherwork in a way I have never seen. Is the belt, with all its pelt and bone, excessive for anyone other than Pocahontas? Maybe. But strap that over a white sundress and wear it with gladiator sandals and maybe your boyfriend's worn-in army shirt (think Alexa Chung at Coachella) and I will fall in love with you.

I wore a black maxi dress today, so I might as well do a maxi dress post. Of course, I'm happy to share my love of the maxi dress, but I'd also like to convince the boyfriend that not only "religious women" wear such hemlines (I think he just prefers me in short skirts, as most boys probably would, but here is today's lesson all wrapped up in parentheses: always dress for yourself first and foremost, otherwise it's just no fun!).

The maxi dress is nothing new and I'm not breaking ground here...but I just like them. I mentioned something a little while ago about layers. You can always tell a person has impeccable style if they've mastered the art of layering. Each individual garment may seem simple or plain on its own (in this case, t-shirt, jeans, sweater...), but methodically put together, the look is polished and complete. Without romance, life seems a little lackluster, so I found some in this editorial to share with you. Maybe it's the serene expression on Kristy Hume's face, the overexposed/faded/vintage look of the photos, the delicate chiffon blouses, the relaxed poolside setting, or more overtly the title of the editorial that's giving me a romantic vibe. I just feel like her lover is photographing her and writing her love letters. Who writes love letter anymore? It's a dying art form that needs to be revived.

You may remember Kristy Hume from, say, every magazine cover in the 90s. I love her because on one hand, she's a Birkenstock-wearing Woodstock hippy, but on the other hand, when asked by a Russian reporter what was the most exciting part of modeling, she answered: "Um, the money." I'm still searching for the perfect (and affordable) shoe. I'm still debating between new boots or a pair of wedge sandals. Maybe wedge boots? Confusion.

In my mind, my dream boots are maybe black leather, maybe khaki canvas, more spring inspired, have an open toe, lace up (flashes of Alexander Wang's Freja and McQueen's Faithful), have a chunky heel to facilitate walking on Amsterdam's cobblestones, maybe some platform (flashes of those Burberry boots). Boots, where are you? Let me find you. As for wedges...alas, I'm warming up to even the giant wooden ones, but I haven't fallen in love with any I've seen yet.

I like the athletic look of their winter collection. Sport-chic is a huge trend lately - think Alexander Wang S/S 2010 football collection. The thing I like about sportswear collections is that you can kind of be a little tongue-in-cheek with your literal take on sporty (bold lace-up theme here), but sportswear is inherently simple and casual (tank tops, t-shirts) so it's still wearable. Basically, it's fun.

I got this vintage bowler hat a while back and I think I only wore it once. Well, here it is! Channeling a bit of Charlie Chaplin today. Or Clockwork Orange? Two very different things.

I was planning to wear my beloved flea market turquoise necklace with this outfit, but yesterday, it exploded right outside the door to my building. After which, I spent about 10 minutes squatting there, with groceries, purse and keys still awkwardly in my arms/hands...scooping beads off the ground and also retrieving them from the inside of my shirt...beads falling everywhere...three construction men staring at me. (SATC: "I came all the way from New York to squat and scoop at Dior...")

Oh well. Nothing a little dental floss and handy work can't fix.

Browsing through La Garçonne's online shop and creating some looks. Can you tell this is one of my favourite activities (didn't you ever play dress up with paper dolls as a wee child? same appeal)? Looking at expensive and pretty pretty items might seem either masochistic or like an exercise in futility...but it inspires me, allows me to throw trends together and puts specific looks in my brain, making it easier to find more affordable substitutes. They are kind of just guidelines/examples of what we could look for. All this to say, I created a daytime and nighttime look for spring/summer. Which would you rather wear? My DAY or NIGHT look? I once wrote, on this very blog, that wedges were a "legitimate fashion choice...I will never get into." This is a lesson. Never say never when it comes to fashion choices. (Though, I still stand by never wearing leggings as pants. Neverrrrr.) Ok. Well spring is here and I'm having a shoe dilemma. I don't want to wear my winter combat-like boots anymore and every pair of heels/boots I own are 3-4-5" suitable only for evening. What do I wear during the day with skirts or jean shorts (worn with tights, of course, let's not get ahead of ourselves, it's April) or my Acne jeans I wear rolled up slightly? Oxfords, ballerina flats or Chucks, sure. But what about those days where I'm cocktailing before sundown and I want my feet to feel a bit more special?

Wedges. I want them. And I don't need to go all-out with a 6" wedge like the Atacomas (a legitimate fashion choice I will never get into) or chunky clog wedges I see everywhere (we can thank Chanel for the clog craze). The following is my wedge wish list.

The picture is a cell phone shot of Garance shooting someone while Scott is shooting her. Amazing right? Theirs were the first fashion blogs I knew of, before I was even really into fashion blogs. They are pioneers and beautiful and, yes, I fully envy their life. The video is great moments and little moments and nothing moments of their experience at the fashion weeks. My favourite parts: 00:35-00:48 for the silliness and her laugh, 2:14 and 3:43 for the intimacy of sharing a creative passion. Want. Their. Life.

I like this editorial not only because it features three of my favourite models (Freja, Abbey Lee and of course Lara=goddess) but also because it stood out from other editorials. The playful/facetious styling (i.e. making sophisticated garments by Chanel, Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs look raggedy) caught my eye. That combined with the "shrunken" cropped sweaters and hairsprayed messes of hair make it look like the whole editorial went into the dryer, came out and somehow...still managed to look great because it's different and not predictably "pretty." So kudos to fashion editor Karl Templer and photographer Steven Meisel for this Vogue Italia editorial.

Denim, lace and shoes

Jalouse March 2010 continues the big denim trend for spring. I chose my favourites from the editorial. Stylist Sébastien Cambos dresses Marloes Horst (photographed by Sol Sanchez) in a Chanel cotton and crinoline skirt, in Vanessa Bruno fringe and in delicate lace for a feminine take on denim. I also get kind of a western cowgirl vibe from the hats (also a stripper vibe - not so keen on the poses). The fourth picture has no denim, but I am in love with that Dolce & Gabbana white lace and fringe dress. I want to get married in it (to it?) and I hate weddings, particularly wedding dresses.

Last, but not least, the shoes. You may remember them from such Jalouse editorials as this. They are Sportmax laced leather and canvas cutaway boots. I want them. I prefer them in muted beige or khaki green tones rather than the brown ones featured in this Jalouse editorial.

Flea market treasure

I picked up this big turquoise necklace (hey, can you guess what my recent obsession is?) at the outdoor flea market in Jaffa - probably the best flea market I've been to because of its dizzying selection of jewelry and clothing but also its affordable prices. I think this necklace set me back an equivalent of 5 euro.

I look forward to going back to Israel if not solely for that flea market. Jaffa (Yafo in Hebrew) is beautiful - it's "the most ancient city centre and port within the Tel Aviv region" and believed to be one of the oldest ports in the world (wikipedia). You can also tell by all the modern apartments, trendy bars and restaurants surfacing that the area is being gentrified. It's a neighbourhood now favoured by yuppy artists (I was shown a beautiful place with a rooftop terrace now occupied by some actor - would love to live in that), so you get a mix of old and new.

I was only able to do a quick once over through the small streets riddled with booths, boutiques, shops and narrow corridors of junk and goodies. I would love to spend an entire day at the flea market taking pictures and hunting for treasures, but unfortunately I only got there Friday afternoon (closed on weekends and I left Sunday)...

Alright, it's been only 3 days since I've been back and I'm already nostalgic! Here is today's outfit. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I think every girl should have at least one statement necklace. It'll make your outfit and it doesn't have to cost you much.

J.Crew Fall 2010 RTW

J. Crew? Who knew. The collection depicts: "Edie Beale goes to Girl Scout camp." If you haven't seen Grey Gardens (the original documentary, not the Drew Barrymore/Jessica Lange HBO version), watch it. Bizarre/wonderful Big Edie and Little Edie are creative director Jenna Lyons' inspiration for this J. Crew collection.

There is just too much I love about this. It's easy to admire individual pieces: the tweed blazers and coats, chambray button downs, the fur bag, shearling lined vest, knit thigh highs and that wonderful plaid flannel cape. What really blows me away, however, is the textural layering. I'm beginning to realize that mastering the art of layering is the essence of style. Details, like floral embellishments and hats by Albertus Swanepoel add to the eccentric styling. Also note the presence of camel. Camel is the new black, or should I say the new khaki, which was the new black a month ago?

The pastels and yellows in this 2005 Vogue UK editorial seem fitting for this occasion. This is Lily Donaldson by Carter Smith. It's always fun to flip through old editorials and ponder whether the styling is still relevant. I wouldn't immediately know that this is five years old, but you can kind of tell by the accessories...or the hem lines, details on the cardigans... I think about it and yeah, this is kind of how my friends and I dressed in 2005. We didn't shy away from colour, we loved pastels, big beaded necklaces and chunky bracelets.

Leaving on a jet plane

It's my last morning in Israel - leaving for the airport in a few hours. I know my posts have been sparse since I've been here, but once I get back to rainy Amsterdam and we remove beaches from the equation, I'm sure I'll be back to my regular posting self. Today's inspiration stems from three things:

1 - Switching back to cold(er) weather i.e. having to surrender the sundress and flip flops for something more seasonally appropriate.

2 - Missing my girlfriends. A lot.

3 - Amanda Norgaard, the 17-year-old Danish model.

These pictures have been sitting on my desktop for a while and I still find the oversized jean shorts and Doc Martens effortless and refreshing. The long side braid à la Alexander Wang S/S 2010 is something I would be constantly wearing if I hadn't CUT OFF ALL MY HAIR last winter. And looking at the pictures of Amanda with Dorothea smiling and being silly makes me miss having a good friend around.

I just got back from the lowest place on earth, 422 metres below sea level and supersaline, Yam Ha-melah i.e. the Dead Sea. Of course it rained all of yesterday and I never actually made it INTO the lake because it was cold (rationalization: I've been in it before) and why subject yourself to that when the hotel spa reproduces the salt water floating experience at 37 degrees celcius?

Well I'm back and it's time to post. I love this picture. This is Natasha Poly in Muse accessorized to excess, which is something I always advocate. It reminds me of hovering over my mother's jewelry boxes and trying on everything at once. Shouldn't we still be allowed to have fun and play dress-up? I kind of want to wear this to the airport and see how frustrated people get when I get to the metal detectors. I walked around Tel Aviv yesterday eating candy and watermelon popsicles. I bought a cute floral dress (pictures to come soon) and scoped out some big turquoise rings (and for some strange reason those red, heart-shaped, ubiquitous-as-hipster-shutter-shades, Lolita sunglasses I'm still thinking about today - why not? And don't you think they would have gone great with the outfit?) at an outdoor market I might just have to go back for. Garance. I can't believe I haven't even posted about her yet - hers was the first fashion blog I ever got into. Not only does Garance Doré take beautiful pictures, have amazing style and write with a charming Parisienne humour, but she draws in that kind of effortless way that displays talent in one stroke.

These seem like the perfect springtime daytime outfits with all the casual loose layers and bright colours. I want to be wearing every single one of them (I wouldn't mind the long, messy, wavy mane either). They teach us three wonderful things:

1- Khaki green goes with pretty much any colour. Here, it's paired with bright pink or yellow, which are great eye-catching complements.

2- It doesn't matter if you're just wearing a simple, oversized t-shirt. You'll still feel like a rockstar if you accessorize with huge necklaces. I love the beaded with brown leather string necklace in the third picture. I want it. I also love the big turquoise rings.

3- Colourful/print oversized bags = yes, please.

I wanted to title this post "sheer shearling" (as in utter/absolute not transparent) or like "sheer(ling) luck" because I think one of the biggest reasons why I started a blog was to pun at liberty. But I stopped myself. But then I wrote this, so I didn't really stop myself. I love the shearling trend - I saw a couple of great shearling lined leather jackets at a thrift store in Berlin but my budget just did not permit. I also don't approve of spending more than 10, maybe 20 Euro on thrift items. But it IS my birthday today (happy birthday to me!), so maybe if I find another one I like, I'll treat myself.

Since I'm on the "girly" theme already, I thought I'd post some pictures from "It's Witchcraft," the Wildfox fall 2010 lookbook (to see the whole "story," go to ilovewildfox.com). And yes, that IS Nicole Fox, the 5'7" redheaded America's Next Top Model winner, looking amazing. I love Wildfox's campaigns because they always have somewhat disheveled girls prancing around and looking hot, they are always colourful, fun and quirky and they really make you understand the value of a cute graphic tee.

So I'm posting looks from Stretsis, an indie label helmed by Pim Sukhahuta, as a very literal interpretation of Spring's arrival. Daisy adorned, pastel framed shades (by Thierry Lasry) and ruffled floral party dresses. Maybe it's slightly too "girly" for me. Because I LOOK sixteen, I generally try to dress older (and by older, I mean my actual age) and more sexy or sophisticated. But sometimes, it's necessary to put on a cute baby-doll dress and be a fun-loving hippy girly girl, right? I choose the outfit with the baby blue blazer, because it takes the girly down half a notch. That outfit is perfect for, let's say, a birthday night, which would, let's say, hypothetically be in two days. Hypothetically.
